CANNON BEACH , OREGON – Thirty-three years ago, Haystack Gallery was opened by renowned Idaho photographer and teacher Floyd Peterson. In 1985, photographer Bill Coomes and his wife Patty bought the gallery and some photos from Floyd. In conjunction with the Cannon Beach Gallery Group's August “In Focus” exhibit; Haystack Gallery will be celebrating our rich beginnings with our “In Focus” exhibition featuring the photography of co-owner Bill Coomes, the historic photo collection of Alex Blendl, photographers Stan Brown and John Van Zytveld and a few black & white photos by Floyd Peterson.
A former portrait photographer from Colorado, Bill Coomes came to Oregon and found his passion photographing the ever changing light of the Oregon coast. Haystack Gallery , now owned by Bill and Patty, carries his color photos capturing our area from dawn to sunset and even the few days of snow. Over the years Alex Blendl has haunted garage sales, and estate sales gathering negatives of old historical photographs. Blendl has collected thousands of images and prints them by hand in his darkroom as they were meant to be. Printing old cracked glass negatives, sheet negs., and roll film negs., working his darkroom magic, we can all look back in the past too see how our ancestors lived, worked and played. How about an 1899 photo of Celilo Falls (now gone), Ducks vs. Stanford football 1940, the Wreck of the Peter Iredale 1906, and the ever popular 1921 Seaside swimsuit contest. Floyd Peterson and his wife, Jeanette, were the original owners of Haystack Gallery. Floyd taught music at the University of Idaho in Moscow , and lived in Cannon Beach during the summer months. He had a dark room in the gallery, where hand developed all his black and white images and taught many local people, including George Vetter darkroom techniques. He loved using his large format 8” x 10” camera to capture the beauty of nature. Floyd also had the honor of teaching photography classes at the Friends of Ansel Adams. Floyd passed away this past year and we are fortunate to have several of his black and white photographs in the gallery. Stan Brown, now retired, enjoys his hobby of photography. He lives in Portland , but also has a place here in Cannon Beach . He prefers color photography and has images of Haystack Rock, including one from near Breakers Point with elk grazing in the foreground. Washington resident, John VanZytveld's photography focuses on the outdoors. His images range from the traditional coastline scenes to our magnificent mountains and from eagles to their habitat. He also loves the colors abundant in the Northwest seasonal changes which are reflected in mountain wildflowers to blazing fall colors.
