CANNON BEACH , OREGON – June is the Plein-Air & More exhibition month and Haystack Gallery and the Cannon Beach Gallery Group invites you to join us Saturday, June 26th for our 2nd annual Plein Air and More Event. Seventeen artists will paint, sculpt and photograph Cannon Beach, showing us the town and coastline through their eyes.
Artists will be at work throughout the town from 11am-4pm on Saturday. Sunday their previous day's work will be for sale in the Gallery representing them along with more of their work. Participating artists include: Christopher Bibby, Janet Bland, Christopher Burkett, Paula Carlson, Sylvia Carlton, Janis Ellison, Sarah Goodnough, Jeffery Hull, Eric Jacobsen, Scott Johnson, Nano Lopez, Miska, Sally O'Neill, Julie Ann Smith, Michael David Sorensen, George Vetter and Pamela Wachtler-Fermanis.
Haystack Gallery this year will have three of our artists participating; new to the event is pastel artist Janis Ellison and oil painter Sally O'Neill. Returning this year is watercolorist Michael D. Sorensen, who last year in the event painted several pieces during the allotted time.
Janis
Ellison - Janis is a native Californian who found herself
living in New Mexico in the mid 1990's. She was drawn to the dramatic
landscape of New Mexico and began taking pastel classes from Deborah
Christiansen (Secor). Janis found her tribe and painted alongside her
friends and mentors in the budding days of the early pastel painters
of this century. Her love of nature and the outdoors was a natural
companion to her passion for painting plein-air and continual quest
to share her view through her paintings.
In 2006, Janis moved Oregon , where the pristine setting of her new home provides endless inspiration for her work. Her honors include signature status in Pastel Society of New Mexico, Sierra Pastel Society, and Northwest Pastel Society. Janis has been published in The Pastel Artists International Magazine and won numerous prestigious awards in regional, national and international shows.
Sally O'Neill - A Native of Southern California, Sally
O'Neill has been interested in the arts since childhood. A music major
in college, Sally taught piano as well as performed for many years. During
the early 1980's she tried her hand at painting for a short time, mostly
concentrating on watercolors. In 1998 she decided to try working primarily
with oils, which proved to be a life changing decision.
“As soon as I started working in oils I couldn't get enough. As an admirer of the impressionists I loved the effects of light and color the medium allowed. My attempt is to create a place more beautiful than perhaps it may actually be. I want my paintings to bring the viewer into a world they would love to be in. A world of beauty and sun drenched days”
Although largely self-taught, Sally has studied privately with a number of instructors, including her constant mentor, watercolorist Don O'Neill. Locally she has studied alla prima painting with Leta Belleque-Bunnell .
Sally's work has been seen in many local art shows and she is the recipient of numerous awards. Her work is in a number of private as well as corporate collections.
Michael
David Sorensen - Michael started watercolor painting at age
13 and has enjoyed it ever since. Michael claims that he started drawing
as soon as he could hold a pencil in an effort to compete with his
older brother, Dan, and his dad. His dad made a living for several
years as a professional artist, blowing glass, so when it came time
to home school Michael and Dan, their dad became the art teacher. After
graduating from high school, Michael went on to Clark College in his
hometown of Vancouver , Washington . At Clark College , Michael took
every art class he could fit into his schedule and met several instructors
that pushed him in his artwork. He graduated in spring of 2001 and
still relies on his brother and dad for art instruction and an ever-ready
honest critique of his artwork.
One of Michael's favorite things to do is travel and explores all of the amazing things that God created. Many of his paintings are inspired by road trips with his brother, Dan and his friend Adam. The three of them are currently working toward their goal of seeing every National Park in the U.S. and Canada .
