CANNON BEACH , OREGON – Haystack Gallery, celebrating its 32nd anniversary in Cannon Beach , is hosting a month long “Plein-Air” exhibition in conjunction with the other members of the Cannon Beach Gallery Group. “For the entire month of June we will be featuring our Plein-Air artists,” says Patty Coomes, owner of Haystack Gallery. “We will have paintings from Sean Conrad who lives in Iowa , Don Bishop from Portland , along with Michael David Sorensen and John Ebner, both artists from Washington . Plein-Air artists paint on location and out in the elements. After schlepping their easel, paints, and various other supplies to the perfect spot, the artists spend the next several hours painting madly. The constantly changing light and shadows are a major challenge to the artists. The outdoor elements including rain showers, fighting the wind, bugs and various curious four legged creatures also add to the experience of Plein-Air painting.”
On Saturday, June 27 Michael David Sorensen will join with other Plein-Air artists from the Gallery Group and “ Paint Cannon Beach ”. All around town, artists will set up their “mini-studio” on the street and over the next several hours create a painting. Artists Featured John Ebner John's fascination with the Puget Sound island country began 20 years ago, since leaving the family farm in Sublimity, Oregon . His background in commercial art led to fine arts in the early '70s when he started painting watercolors. John's passion for the Pacific Northwest is manifested through smooth, powerful, yet simplified sweeps of color. Being a Northwest artist for more than 20 years, John has mastered the ability to suspend time, creating a lasting image of a quiet moment. Ebner's paintings calm the spirit allowing the viewer to feel the same serenity as the artist. The mystery and depth of nature presented on the paper is a statement of John's personal nature. Ebner's work is displayed in the following corporate collections: Boeing, Washington Mutual Bank, Pacific NW Bell, Hyundai Corp of Japan , Texaco, Microsoft, and Safeco. Sean Conrad Sean began his career in San Diego , CA with an education in graphic design and computer animation. After graduation, he worked in graphic design, excited with all the possibilities available to him. He moved to Trinidad , CO to continue fulfilling his newfound dream of becoming a professional artist. Doors opened, and he met, became friends with, and began to study informally with internationally-known artist, Eric Michaels. Well on his way to a satisfying and successful career in fine art, Sean Conrad has the advantage of age, early wisdom in regard to following one's heart, and a supportive wife and friends. "My hope is to bring God glory in every painting that I create. I'm so thankful that He's blessed me the way He has and allowed me to make a living creating paintings and living this wonderful life of an artist". Don Bishop I have been painting in the Northwest for many years, and enjoy painting the magical scenery and light that makes this such a beautiful area. Painting, for me, is a continual growth process which usually involves creating several paintings a week. “My roots in painting are influenced by the Early California Plein Air Impressionist style. Originally from Southern California , I attended art school at California State University Long Beach, where I received a Bachelor's degree in Art. Seeing many of the Early California Plein Air paintings at various museums and galleries had a major influence on the development of my style. Other painting influences include the tonalist style and the Hudson River School . I especially enjoy the work of Innes, Bischoff, Wendt, & Braun. My goal is to follow in the footsteps of the early masters, creating paintings that capture the qualities of light and color of the early impressionist movement.” Michael David Sorensen Michael started watercolor painting at age 13 and has enjoyed it ever since. Sorensen claims that he started drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil in an effort to compete with his older brother, Dan, and his dad. His dad made a living for several years as a professional
artist, blowing glass, so when it came time to home school Michael and
Dan, their dad became the art teacher. After graduating from high school,
Michael went on to Clark College . At Clark College , he took every art
class he could fit into his schedule and met several instructors that
pushed him in his artwork. Sorensen graduated from Clark College in spring
of 2001 and still relies on his brother and dad for art instruction and
an ever-ready honest critique of his artwork.
